Neighbors:
As Chair of Economic Development for the County Council, I was thrilled to join the Governor to speak at a press conference announcing a major life-sciences and mixed-use project that will be the home of the University of Maryland’s Institute for Health Computing, a planned research facility by the North Bethesda Metro.

This is an extremely important project as we seek to fortify and build our life sciences cluster in Montgomery County. It will also bring much needed housing right on top of Metro. And yes, that means new riders too!
And it wouldn’t be possible without the strong public-private partnership between the State, the County, WMATA, and the developer. Among the County’s commitment, we have supported $40 million for the Institute of Health Computing, and a 15 year tax abatement through the WMATA PILOT for the housing units in the project. Furthermore, this project will strengthen our efforts advocating for a pedestrian-bike connection across the CSX rail tracks, connecting the Randolph Hill neighborhood with the North Bethesda Metro Station.
See some renderings of what the project could look like below.

Listening Session on the University Boulevard Corridor Master Plan
The Planning Board expects to send over their recommendations on the University Boulevard Corridor Master Plan in late June. Then it is on the Council for consideration, including a public hearing, committee and full council worksessions, and ultimately final action later this year. To gather community feedback on the Planning Board’s recommendations, I will be hosting an in-person listening session in July at Odessa Shannon Middle School. Your feedback is extremely important to me, so please consider attending. You may also send written feedback directly to me at Councilmember.Fani-González@montgomerycountymd.gov

WMATA Bus Route Change
Many residents have expressed concern over changes to the L8 Metrobus route. WMATA is not eliminating service in this area. Instead, they are rolling out a regional redesign through their Better Bus Initiative, which takes effect June 29.
Under this plan, the L8 will be replaced by the new M22 Metrobus, which combines the current L8 route with the Y2, Y7, and Y8 routes to connect Olney to Bethesda via Aspen Hill and Wheaton. While the L8 name will no longer be used, the M22, along with adjustments to Ride On Route 34, will continue to serve the same communities, offering improved weekend service and increased overall frequency.
For residents concerned about gaps in coverage, Ride On Route 34 will be rerouted to stay on Connecticut Avenue rather than detouring via Veirs Mill and University, ensuring continued access in the Kensington–Aspen Hill area.
I encourage residents to explore WMATA’s interactive trip planner of the new system to see how their trips will change.
Sincerely,

Natali Fani-González
